West Mercer Spelling Bee Information – Competitive & Non Competitive
The West Mercer competitive spelling bee will take place on Wednesday, March 1 at 2:05PM, and will strictly follow the guidelines set forth by the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The Regional Spelling Bee will take place on March 19 at Town Hall in Seattle and the winner from West Mercer’s Competitive Bee will participate in that event. If our West Mercer student wins the Regional Bee, then that student and one chaperone will continue on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. While the West Mercer competitive spelling bee does not restrict participation based on age or grade, the spelling words that we are required to present to the competitors are geared for the higher grades/ages (3rd grade through 5th grade). Please carefully consider whether the competitive bee is appropriate for your child or whether the non-competitive bee would be a better fit.
For those students who do not want a competitive environment, West Mercer will also host a fun, non-competitive spelling bee on Tuesday, February 28 at 3:45PM until approximately 5:00PM for all grades. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to experience a spelling bee in a fun and friendly environment. Your child is welcome to participate in both the non-competitive and the competitive spelling bee if he/she so wishes. Here is a list of practice spelling words organized by grade level. In addition, we have included the 2017 School Spelling Bee Study List provided by Scripps for student use and preparation. If your student(s) would like to participate, the Registration Form needs to be completed and returned to the school office by Friday, February 24. This PTSA sponsored event needs parent volunteers to help make it happen. If you have questions or concerns, or if you would like to help with these events, please contact Dalia Silverstein at firstname.lastname@example.org.
